Biotechnology company Exscientia announced Wednesday it will expand its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its artificial intelligence-driven drug discovery platform.
The platform, built using AWS technologies, aims to accelerate early drug development at a lower cost by integrating generative AI models with robotic lab automation. Exscientia's approach differs from conventional high-throughput screening methods by using AI to design and identify promising drug candidates.
The company's UK-based AutomationStudio synthesizes and tests these candidates using advanced robotics. Data from these tests is then fed back into the AI system, creating a continuous loop of design, experimentation and improvement.
Exscientia's platform leverages various AWS services, including Amazon Bedrock, which provides access to large language models through a unified API. The company expects this integration of virtual design and physical experimentation to benefit both internal projects and collaborations with partners like Sanofi.
"By encoding, automating and integrating the loop of design, synthesis and testing with our generative design workflows in our new AutomationStudio, we have taken the next step to increase the speed of learning, and to reduce the time and cost of exploring new therapeutic alternatives," said David Hallett, Ph.D., interim CEO and chief scientific officer of Exscientia.
The expanded collaboration aims to further Exscientia's mission of transforming drug discovery and development in the biopharmaceutical industry. By combining human expertise with AI and innovative automation technologies, the company seeks to deliver higher-quality, precision-designed therapies to patients more rapidly and efficiently.
