A new survey shows a significant portion of executives don't have confidence that their company data can deliver accurate outputs from artificial intelligence projects.

The survey of C-suite executives and AI leaders by Teradata and NewtonX found that while 61% said they fully trust the reliability and validity of their AI outputs, a sizable 40% do not believe their company's data is ready yet to achieve accurate AI outcomes.

"The foundation of AI is clean, reliable, trustworthy data because it is the backbone of AI outputs," said Jacqueline Woods, Chief Marketing Officer at Teradata, the data cloud analytics company that commissioned the survey.

The survey exposed a lack of clear AI strategies aligned with business objectives at many companies. While 89% of executives believe AI is necessary to stay competitive, only 28% said their AI strategy closely supports broader business goals. Just 12% have deployed AI solutions company-wide.

Even among internal AI projects using corporate data, 63% rely on a mix of public and private data sets, raising concerns about transparency and potential bias.

Barriers to effective scale included a scarcity of AI talent (39%), lack of budget (34%), difficulty measuring business impact (32%), and insufficient technology infrastructure (32%).

Looking at tangible results, 84% expect to see results within a year and 58% foresee quantifiable returns within 6 months of deployment. However, 60% said they've already seen demonstrable return on investment from existing AI solutions.

The survey highlighted several key aspects of trusted AI, including security (61%), transparency (55%), governance (45%) and performance improvement (40%).

"Working with the right partners and solutions can help accelerate trust by showing accurate results and ROI from AI projects quickly," Woods said. "But remember, all successful AI projects start with a foundation of clean, reliable data."

The survey included expert interviews and quantitative analysis of 100-plus executives responsible for AI strategy across industries.
