NetApp, a data infrastructure company, announced Wednesday that its artificial intelligence-powered ransomware protection system has achieved a 99% detection rate in third-party testing.

The company's ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with Artificial Intelligence (ARP/AI) received a AAA rating from SE Labs, an independent testing firm. The system demonstrated high accuracy in identifying ransomware attacks while avoiding false positives.

SE Labs conducted rigorous tests using hundreds of known ransomware variants. NetApp's ARP/AI not only detected 99% of advanced ransomware attacks but also achieved 100% accuracy in identifying legitimate files without raising false alarms.

This level of precision is crucial for businesses seeking to minimize disruptions caused by ransomware attacks. NetApp's system aims to provide real-time detection and response capabilities integrated directly into primary storage systems.

"NetApp has passed a significant milestone in the fight against ransomware as the first and only storage vendor to offer AI-driven on-box ransomware detection with externally validated top-notch protection effectiveness," said Dr. Arun Gururajan, vice president of research and data science at NetApp.

The company emphasized that traditional ransomware detection methods relying on backup data are often too slow to effectively mitigate risks. By embedding detection capabilities within storage systems, NetApp aims to improve cyber resilience while reducing the operational burden on IT teams.

NetApp's ARP/AI system is designed to continuously adapt to new ransomware variants, offering a future-proof defense against evolving cybersecurity threats.

This achievement aligns with NetApp's broader strategy of developing intelligent data infrastructure. The company recently released more powerful, all-flash storage systems to support AI workloads, built on its secure storage infrastructure.

NetApp's focus on AI-powered security underscores the growing importance of advanced threat detection in an era of increasing cybersecurity risks.
